What is green employability?
The jobs of the future: discover a world of green career opportunities through electrification
It’s no news that the energy transition is transforming the way we produce energy, but what not everyone knows is that these changes has proven to be a powerful lever for creating thousands of new green jobs. Iberdrola is leading this new green employability with the Global Green Employment platform, a meeting point for everyone who wants to prepare themselves to face this change.

Jobs created by the energy transition are key to building a cleaner, more sustainable world.
In recent years the labour market has undergone an unprecedented transformation. The rapid pace of technological advances has been the main driver of this paradigm shift, but it’s not the only one: the energy transition is also playing a key role in reshaping the world of work, driving the creation of green jobs in multiple fields.
Defined as jobs that substantially contribute to conserving or restoring the environment, green jobs are already here in many countries. In Spain alone the Biodiversity Foundation and the Spanish Office of Climate Change estimate that the transition to a green economy will create more than 700,000 sustainability-related jobs.
However, in this context of continuous transformation, there are also challenges, such as the need to develop a skilled workforce in the green labour market through specific guidance and training. In this scenario and to meet this challenge, Iberdrola, through its Global Green Employment (GEE) initiative, promotes employability in key industries such as renewable energy, energy efficiency, sustainable transport and sustainable agriculture.
Global Green Employment: the only hub for green employability
In 2023, Iberdrola launched a pioneering initiative aimed at improving green employability. And that is how Global Green Employment (GGE) came about, a major project that represents a milestone in the company's commitment to a future committed to society and the fight against climate change.
GGE is a platform to list green jobs and post labour counselling for all those seeking a better future. Its objective is to promote employability in the green energy transition, making available the necessary training and assistance combined with the job offers currently available.
With the launch of this hub, GGE opens the doors of the labour market to those who need it and helps companies to find the best talent possible. In other words, it’s a meeting point for those who want to focus their future career on green jobs and the business and educational agents that can help make that happen.
To achieve this goal, Global Green Employment's value proposition is based on four core ideas:
A fourth green news area called Green Pulse has also been added, where you can find out about the latest developments in green employability or learn more about the latest tech in renewables.
Why are green jobs key to the future?
Jobs in industries such as renewable energy, energy efficiency, sustainable transport and agriculture play a crucial role in the fight against climate change. These areas not only help mitigate climate change, but also create jobs and promote sustainable economic development. In this context, the GGE hub is positioned as a key tool with four clear objectives:
What jobs does electrification entail?
To talk about green jobs is to talk about the diversity of opportunities that are emerging in the major sectors of the energy transition. Green careers encompass a wide range of specialised professions, including technicians, engineers, researchers, renewable energy specialists and other roles that have a crucial part to play in the operation of a renewable facility or solution.
In the sections below, known on the GEE platform as green categories, we’ll explore some of the major renewable energy sources and the most in-demand green jobs that are driving this shift towards a sustainable future.
Solar energy
Solar energy has established itself as one of the renewables with the greatest global impact. Advances in photovoltaic panels, new storage techniques and multifunctional applications position it as one of the main sources of clean energy on the planet. Some of the jobs related to solar are:
- Solar panel installers
- Maintenance technicians at photovoltaic plants
- Specialised sales staff
Wind energy
The technological development of turbines and transmission systems has made wind energy a symbol of innovation and sustainability. Wind farms, both onshore and offshore, represent one of the biggest opportunities for green jobs. Here you can work as:
- Wind turbine maintenance technicians
- Wind turbine engineers
- Operators at wind power plants
