Iberdrola, through its subsidiary in Spain, has begun commissioning the Valdecañas pumped-storage hydroelectric power plant in Cáceres, Extremadura, in the southwest of the country, which has a total capacity of 225 MW and a hybridised 15 MW battery. This power plant will reduce CO2 emissions by 200,000 tonnes per year and will create 165 direct and 500 indirect jobs, increasing skilled positions available and benefiting the local economy. The reversible power plant helps balance the consumption and demand curve, stabilising the electricity grid by storing and recovering energy as needed.
The project has had minimal impact during its execution, taking advantage of existing infrastructure and without needing to lay new transmission lines. The commissioning of Valdecañas consolidates Iberdrola España's commitment to hydroelectric storage, adding to other recent projects in Portugal and Spain. Iberdrola España currently has 18 pumped hydro plants with an installed capacity of 6,000 MW.
