Iberdrola is joining the Plataforma x Aire Limpio initiative, a platform for clean air that intends to improve air quality in cities across Spain

Iberdrola has joined the Plataforma x Aire Limpio initiative, a platform presented earlier today in Madrid that aims to improve air quality in cities across Spain. According to the World Health Organization (WHO), air quality is poor in most of Spain's urban areas, which puts public health at risk as the first cause of premature death in Spain.

Cognisant of this situation, Iberdrola is now one of several public and private organisations from various sectors –mainly energy, transport and logistics– who have come together to create Plataforma x Aire Limpio. This platform seeks to address the urgent need to improve air quality in Spanish cities and to work alongside local authorities to implement more efficient policies according to each municipal area's needs. To do so, they will be drawing on proven best practices and policies.

During the presentation of the platform, Jose Arceluz, its chairman and member of the Iberdrola Regulatory Committee, expressed that 'it is the joint responsibility of everyone involved to rise to the increasingly insistent demand that civil society is making for cleaner air'. Mr Arceluz was joined by Madrid City Council's Environment and Mobility delegate, Inés Sabanés.

Plataforma x Aire Limpio is supported by an Advisory Committee chaired by acclaimed scientist and researcher Xavier Querol from the Institute of Environmental Assessment and Water Research at CSIC.

Also on the Committee are Professor Lucio Alonso Alonso, who manages the PhD Programme in Environmental Engineering at the Chemical and Environmental Engineering Department at the Advanced School of Engineering of Bilbao (UPV-EHU); Julio Díaz Jiménez, a Doctor in Physical Sciences and head scientist at the Carlos II Institute of Health at the National School of Healthcare; Cristina Monge, with a PhD from the University of Zaragoza, who works as the director of dialogue for the ECODES Foundation; the Spanish Society of Pneumology and Thoracic Surgery (SEPAR); and the Energy, Environment and Technology Research Centre (CIEMAT).

Iberdrola, committed to the SDGs

Iberdrola has joined the clean air platform because of its commitment to achieving the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) within the 2030 Agenda, which the company has made a key part of its corporate strategy.

Iberdrola focusses largely on SDG 7 (affordable and clean energy) and SDG 13 (climate action), but it also works on various initiatives associated with the other goals, as is the case of its involvement in Plataforma x Aire Limpio, which is directly linked to SDG 3 (good health and well‑being) and SDG 11 (sustainable cities and communities).

Furthermore, this type of collaboration among public and private players is a step towards SDG 17, which aims to encourage alliances that will help achieve all of the goals.
