Iberdrola España supports Bayer in the electrification of steam at its Asturias plant

Bayer and Iberdrola España, the Iberdrola Group’s Spanish subsidiary, have signed the agreement that will enable the electrification of Bayer’s production plant in La Felguera (Asturias, in northern Spain), one of the most prominent projects in industrial decarbonization in the Asturian mining basin.

Iberdrola will install an innovative thermal storage system next to the Bayer plant and will convert 100% renewable electricity – sourced from an adjacent self-consumption facility and several renewable plants – into the steam that Bayer needs for its operations. This is the first heat purchase agreement (HPA) of its kind in Spain.

With this significant milestone, the plant that produces Bayer’s acetylsalicylic acid for the entire world will become the first site in its industry in Spain to decarbonise, and one of the first worldwide, thanks to the photovoltaic plant that Iberdrola will install next to the factory on the unusable land of the former thermal power station.
