Iberdrola to electrify Leroy Merlin shop car parks in Spain

  • It continues to accelerate its sustainable mobility plan, which forecasts the installation of 150,000 electric chargers in homes, businesses and on public roads in the coming years.

Iberdrola and Leroy Merlin join forces to promote sustainable mobility. The energy company will be responsible for installing charge points for electric cars in the car parks of all the shops of the leading home improvement company in Spain, which can be used by its customers, employees and suppliers.

The installation of the chargers will begin in Andalusia, Catalonia, Madrid and Valencia and each shop will have at least four spaces with charge points, which will include fast chargers of between 50 kW and 350 kW for recharging in approximately 15 to 30 minutes with 100% green energy from renewable sources and with Guarantee of Origin (GoO) certificates.

With this initiative, Iberdrola is making progress in its plan to deploy sustainable mobility infrastructure in Spain. Leroy Merlin chargers will be geolocated and charging can be managed from the Recarga Pública Iberdrola app, the only one in Spain that incorporates verified information on all electric vehicle charge points, both those of Iberdrola and those of other operators. The charge point is located from the application, its operability is checked in real time and it is booked and paid for from the mobile phone.

“Thanks to the involvement of all stakeholders, we can make progress in our country in the electrification of transport. Leroy Merlin is an optimal ally for electric vehicle users to have convenient and simple alternatives for public charging, which will allow us to progress in sustainable mobility and improve the air quality of our cities and towns,” explained Raquel Blanco, Global Director of Smart Mobility at Iberdrola.

“At Leroy Merlin we are firmly committed to the environment, so sustainable mobility must also be integrated into our business model. So, we are working on the development of a 360º model, relying on customers, suppliers and partners such as Iberdrola for its integration”, says Ignacio Carrasco, technical director of the company in Spain.

Electric mobility and green recovery

Iberdrola continues its commitment to transport electrification in its transition strategy towards a decarbonised economy, as a key way of reducing emissions and pollution and ensuring the green recovery.

The company is deploying a sustainable mobility plan, with an investment of 150 million euros, with which it will intensify the deployment of charge points for electric vehicles in the coming years.

The initiative entails installing around 150,000 charge points in homes, companies and on the public road network in cities, as well as on the main motorways and roads. The commitment to the deployment of high-efficiency stations will take the form of ultra-fast (350 kW) stations every 200 kilometres, super-fast (150 kW) stations every 100 kilometres and fast (50 kW) stations every 50 kilometres.

Iberdrola is aware of the need to boost electric mobility in Spain through coordinated, effective action involving the major players. The company continues to identify opportunities to generate an industrial, commercial and innovation ecosystem to consolidate the development of sustainable mobility. As a result, it has now completed more than 50 infrastructure roll-out agreements with government departments, institutions, companies, service stations and vehicle dealers and manufacturers.

Iberdrola was the first Spanish company to sign up to The Climate Group’s EV100 initiative, with the aim of accelerating the transition to electric vehicles, committing to electrify its entire fleet of vehicles and facilitate charging for staff in its businesses in Spain and the United Kingdom by 2030.

Commitment to mobility and responsible consumption

Leroy Merlin is working resolutely to contribute to meeting the global challenges we face as a society, such as climate change, by promoting sustainable solutions and accompanying our customers in their needs. Currently, the company already has a wide range of electric vehicle chargers on sale that allow consumers to save and move in a more sustainable way.

Leroy Merlin also promotes environmental awareness and education in society with the aim of creating better living environments. For this reason, during the European Mobility Week it has launched a challenge on social networks where it encourages its employees to go to their workplaces using sustainable transport.
