ScottishPower explores electrification of offshore wind operations in the UK

Electrifying offshore operations is a highly feasible, viable and interesting scenario technically and economically. Offshore wind farms could be served by battery-powered vessels recharged by the turbines of the offshore installations themselves according to a study conducted by ScottishPower Renewables (SPR) and Maersk's Stillstrom.

The report is the first in a series of three commissioned by ScottishPower Renewables to explore the electrification of offshore operations with clean technologies and a great example of team work between developers and the supply chain.

The paper analyses the feasibility and benefits of using battery-powered service vessels (E-SOVs) in offshore wind farm operations. Vessels dedicated to these maintenance tasks often remain at sea for extended periods of time.
