Galán to the athletes: "You have changed the way this country is and the way it thinks"
- The Executive Chairman of Iberdrola, Ignacio Galán, received Olympic and Paralympic athletes María Pérez, Teresa Perales, Susana Rodríguez, Sara Sorribes, Elena Congost and Laura Ester at the company's offices in Madrid.
- Galán has announced that Elena Congost and Sara Sorribes will be new Iberdrola Ambassadors, a programme with which the company wants to give greater visibility to a selection of women athletes in the media and social networks.
- The energy company has been since 2016 the main promoter of sport practiced by women and has been collaborating with the Spanish Paralympic Committee's (CPE) Plan de Apoyo al Deporte Objetivo Paralímpico (ADOP) since its creation in 2005.
Iberdrola will continue to promote Spanish sport in the next Olympic cycle, which will culminate with the Los Angeles 2028 Olympic and Paralympic Games. This was stated by its Executive Chairman, Ignacio Galán, during a meeting today with Olympic and Paralympic athletes María Pérez, Teresa Perales, Susana Rodríguez, Sara Sorribes, Elena Congost and Laura Ester at the company's offices in Madrid.
‘You have changed the way of this country is and the way this country things. Today I wanted to be with you to congratulate you and to assure you that in the next Olympics you can continue to count on us. We will be supporting you at every level’, said Galán.
These sportswomen have been closely linked to the electricity company for years. María Pérez, Susana Rodríguez and Laura Ester are part of the Iberdrola Ambassadors programme, with which the company aims to give the greatest possible visibility to a selection of athletes in the media and social networks, creating new role models.
Teresa Perales, for her part, is a member of the honorary jury of the Iberdrola Supera Awards, with which every year the company shows its appreciation for the hard work of those who promote the empowerment of women through sport from the grassroots.
For all these reasons, and within the framework of this meeting, the Executive Chairman of the Group announced that Sara Sorribes and Elena Congost will be new Iberdrola Ambassadors. He also presented these six women with the Iberdrola Medals for Energy in Sport, in recognition of their impeccable professional careers and, in particular, their amazing performance at the Paris 2024 Olympic and Paralympic Games.
After Elena Congost's controversial disqualification from the French Paralympic Games, Galán made a special mention for the marathon runner. The Iberdrola Executive Chairman said: ‘Elena, you have shown great competitive spirit. You sacrificed everything because, more than medals or success, the most important thing is people and team spirit. You helped a teammate who was struggling. We will support you so that you can achieve everything you set out to do.
Two decades promoting equality through sport
Iberdrola firmly believes that sport is one of the essential vehicles for promoting equality. Since 2016, it has been the main promoter of sport practiced by women. It currently supports 35 national federations and gives its name to more than 160 competitions. With its commitment, over these eight years, it has contributed to an increase of more than 80% in the members of these federations, to almost 820,000.
Its focus is not exclusively on elite and federated athletes. It holds the Iberdrola Supera awards every year, with a total of 300,000 euros distributed among six categories. It is also promoting actions in addition to mere sponsorship, such as organising of sporting events or communication campaigns, including its Iberdrola Ambassadors programme.
The encouragement of the electricity company also extends to Paralympic sport. Since its creation in 2005, it has collaborated with the Spanish Paralympic Committee's (CPE) Paralympic Sports Support Plan (ADOP) to provide our athletes with the best conditions to prepare and undertake their participation in all their competitions with guaranteed success.
Likewise, Iberdrola, through its Foundation in Spain and together with the Spanish Paralympic Committee, provides Paralympic athletes who are beneficiaries of the Paralympic Sport Support Plan with scholarships for university and postgraduate training. This collaboration agreement aims to facilitate the professional training of athletes so they can join the job market once their sporting career is over.
Finally, it is worth remembering that the company is one of the companies collaborating with Universo Mujer, a comprehensive initiative for the development of women and their personal growth in society, which was created to develop initiatives that contribute to improving and transforming society through the values of all women's sport.
