Iberdrola in the UK

Leaders in networks and renewables

Iberdrola, through its subsidiary ScottishPower, is one of the largest energy companies in the UK. Its activity focuses on electricity networks, renewable energy and the energy retail sector.

Iberdrola's UK subsidiary, ScottishPower, is one of the UK’s largest energy companies and operates across electricity networks, renewables and the energy retail sector.  It is spearheading the UK’s electrification: from building the clean, renewable power needed to reduce reliance on dirty, volatile fossil fuels, to rewiring the electricity grid — the Group’s current priority — and supporting customers with clean technology in their homes and businesses. It was the first integrated energy company in the United Kingdom to produce 100% green electricity.

In line with Iberdrola’s strategy to increase investment in countries with an A rating and stable regulatory environments, the company will invest €20 billion up to 2028. This will enable the deployment of more clean and green renewable energy, as well as a major modernisation of the network in the United Kingdom. The Strategic Plan 2025-2028 places special emphasis on this area, with projects designed to strengthen distribution and transmission networks so that energy reaches customers and industry across the country more efficiently. This will significantly reduce the UK’s dependence on fossil fuels and strengthen energy security.

Electricity networks: the key to market development in the United Kingdom

Currently, the economic development of this region is linked to the creation of a safe and reliable energy supply. The increase in demand requires a modernised electricity network that enables the generation, storage and interconnection needed to meet these requirements. The Iberdrola Group is aware of this challenge in the country’s electrification, with future scenarios forecasting a demand growth of 25-60% by 2035 and 50-100% by 2040. That is why the UK is now the country that is receiving the largest share of investment within the Strategic Plan 2025-2028. The objective is clear: to develop the infrastructure of the future. This will be achieved through an investment three times higher than in the previous plan, reaching £11.6 billion (€13.1 billion) to be allocated to distribution and transmission networks under the RIIO-T3 and ED3 frameworks.

ScottishPower's main business lines

ScottishPower divides its activity into three main business lines:

Electricity networks: Through its SP Energy Networks and SP Electricity North West businesses, ScottishPower is now the second-largest distribution network operator in the UK, delivering electricity to around 12 million people across a network spanning more than 170,000 kilometres.

SP Energy Networks distributes and connects electricity across Merseyside, Cheshire and North Shropshire (England) and North Wales, as well as central and southern Scotland. SP Electricity North West distributes electricity across the northwest of England including Manchester and the Lake District. It was acquired by Iberdrola in August 2024 and unveiled its new name and visual identity as part of ScottishPower in 2025.

SP Energy Networks also owns and operates the high-voltage transmission network across central southern Scotland.  It has plans to invest up to £12 billion to 2031 via RIIO-T3 in a major rewiring of Britain to support electrification.

ScottishPower Renewables: with almost 3,100 MW of installed capacity, it has 40 onshore and two offshore wind farms in operation. It is also in the process of building the East Anglia THREE offshore wind farm, the largest across the Iberdrola Group, with an investment of almost £4 billion (€4.5 billion), as well as East Anglia TWO. This ambitious plan could see up to 3.9 GW of power generated across its East Anglian projects. By 2028, the company will increase its installed capacity to 5 GW.

ScottishPower Customer: With 4.3 million customers, ScottishPower is one of the largest energy retailers in the United Kingdom, supplying electricity and gas while also helping customers install smart solutions such as electric vehicle chargers, heat pumps and home solar systems in households across the country.
