New England Wind 1, our second wind farm off the coast of Massachusetts

Iberdrola projects Offshore wind United States

Following the commissioning of Vineyard Wind 1, the state of Massachusetts will have a new offshore wind farm − the New England Win 1 project − which will provide 791 MW of clean energy to 400,000 homes in the region and will reduce emissions equivalent to taking 300,000 vehicles off the roads annually.

Iberdrola through Avangrid, its subsidiary in the United States, has been awarded to build a new wind farm off the coast of Massachusetts (United States), which will border the already operational Vineyard Wind 1 to the south. This is New England Wind 1, formerly known as Park City Wind, which together with New England Wind 2 will form part of a 1,870 MW wind farm complex capable of delivering an urgent energy, climate and economic solution to this US state.

Bringing $3 billion of direct investment to the region and the creation of 4,400 new jobs, New England Wind 1 will have an installed capacity of 791 MW, providing clean and reliable energy to power nearly 400,000 homes and reducing emissions equivalent to taking 300,000 gasoline-based cars off the road annually.

The park will be located approximately 30 miles south of Barnstable of the coast of Massachusetts − south of Martha's Vineyard and Nantucket, just where the strongest east coast winds blow − and will not be visible from any point on the coast, reducing the visual impact it may have on the environment. In addition to the wind farm itself, the New England 1 project includes the construction of a new port in Salem and a new offshore wind manufacturing plant in New Bedford.

With local, state, and federal permits, all interconnection rights secured, and a Project Labour Agreement signed, Avangrid is awaiting approval of a power purchase agreement to begin building this new project in 2025, which is slated to reach full commercial operation by 2029.

"At this historic turning point for climate action, New England Wind answers the region’s call for projects that reflect the urgency, ambition, and certainty the moment demands."

Project benefits

New England Wind 1 will completely transform the Bridgeport area, where the operations and maintenance centre will be located in the coming years.

Combined, New England Wind 1 and 2 projects will create 9,200 jobs and deliver $8 billion in direct investment across the region.

Commitment to technical training to boost long-term employment, with a team that can work on both New England Wind and future offshore wind projects on the East Coast.

Investment in affordable housing.

Integration of the existing local industry in Massachusetts, Connecticut and Rhode Island into the offshore wind value chain in the area.

The project will be carried out through Vineyard Wind, a company in which Avangrid* − Iberdrola's US subsidiary − and the Copenhagen Infrastructure Partners (CIP) fund have a 50% stake.

Iberdrola, world leader in renewable energies

At Iberdrola, we dare committed to renewable energy more than two decades ago as a fundamental pillar on which to build our safe, clean and competitive business model. Thanks to this vision, we are today world leaders in renewables, reaching 44,148 MW of clean energy in operation at the end of september 2024.

This commitment is reflected in our Strategic Plan, in which we will allocate €15.5bn gross to renewables. More than half of this amount is focused on offshore wind in the US, UK, France and Germany; 28% on onshore wind and 18% on solar.
